Mark Benstead

Where are you from?
My family is from Merseyside but I grew up in Wigan. Up until recently nobody knew where that was but since Wigan Athletic got promoted to the Premier League it's been a lot easier to explain to people. In the past the town was only famous for Rugby League, Wigan Pier (which doesn’t have a pier) and the head of Keep Britain Tidy. The latter of these something Emma from the news team finds greatly amusing
What is your most embarrassing on-air moment?
Working with Ewen and Roughy is one long embarrassing moment so they all morph together.
When you were a child what did you want to be when you grew up?
For a while I wanted to be in the RAF but I soon changed my mind and switched my attention to what I do these days.
What do you do while the news jingle is playing?
Finish writing my sport safe in the knowledge I’m not on yet.
What do you do for the rest of the hour when you're not reading the sport?
Hmmm, normally 55 minutes are spent rushing around doing interviews and the remaining two minutes are spent writing my script. When I don’t have interviews to do I spend much of my time working out how to say all the names of the Hearts squad.
