Are you drinking too much?

Do you enjoy a drink after work but it sometimes leads to two or three? Maybe you love hitting the town... but not the terrible hangovers!

Almost one woman in six now drink more than double the recommended daily amount of three units according to research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Men still binge drink more, with nearly one in four (23%) consuming twice as much as they should, but the ``gender gap'' is closing.

We all know that drinking too much is bad for our health... but how much is too much? And are we consuming too many units or not?

If in doubt about your units, the Government recommends men should not drink more than 3 - 4 units of alcohol per day, and women should drink no more than 2 - 3 units of alcohol per day.

And this is what is in your favourite tipple:

• A pint of 4% ABV ordinary strength lager (Carling Black Label, Fosters) or bitter (Tetley, Boddingtons) - 2.4 units
• A pint of typical pub ciders at 5.4% ABV - 3.1 units
• A 175ml glass of red or white wine at 12% ABV - 2.1 units
• A 5% ABV alcopop bottle (eg Smirnoff Ice, Bacardi Breezer, WKD, Reef) - 1.4 units
• A pub small single measure (25ml) of 40% ABV spirits - 1 unit
• A pub large single measure (35ml) of 40% ABV spirits - 1.4 units
